A bit more about the custom jewelry process…

What does custom mean exactly?

Having a piece of custom jewelry made means that you get to be involved in the design process rather than buying a ring that is already designed or made. It means that we work together in whatever capacity that suits you to choose metals, gemstones, textures and virtually any design element that you can think of. Most folks have a broad idea of what they’re looking for and it’s my job to take your ideas and inspiration and turn them into a unique, one-of-a-kind special ring suited just for you. It’s great to be inspired by my previous custom rings, as it gives us a great place to start to talk about design elements and cost. Many of my already existing designs or custom projects can be modified or customized by adding gemstones or adjusting size and shape.

During the custom design process there will most likely be several emails, texts, phone calls or meetings where we collaborate until the design is finalized. I work out of my studio located in Northeast Minneapolis and if you’re local, this is where we’ll meet. If you are not local, we’ll communicate mostly via email, zoom, phone and text.

It’s so wonderful to own a piece of jewelry that is unique to you. I love making these pieces because they commemorate moments, occasions and are imbued with stories and history. We are creating heirlooms and knowing that they’ll be worn every day, cherished and passed down is deeply fulfilling.

How much does custom jewelry cost?

Well, that depends! Custom jewelry varies widely in price based on complexity of the design, size, what metal you choose, whether there are gemstones and overall labor. Because the custom design process is labor intensive and I work in gold, my minimum for most projects is $1500. This typically applies to gold bands with no gemstones. The starting point for gold bands with gemstones is typically $2500. If you are interested in silver, please see my collection of commitment bands that are customizable in your size. I do not accept custom design work in silver. I’m often able to give a general price range for your project after we’ve had a consultation.

A $400 non-refundable deposit is required to secure your custom project in our queue and will be used towards the total amount of your custom piece. Custom projects require 3 payment installments; $400 up front and half of estimated balance after wax model is approved. Balance is due prior to shipping or upon delivery for local pick-up. Customer pays shipping costs.

What materials do you work with?

I use locally refined and recycled gold in 14k, 18k yellow, white or rose gold. Platinum is also available. I have several hand picked gemstones on hand to choose from and various sources for ethical diamonds and gemstones. I consider your heirloom stones only if they are professionally appraised/inspected. I do not assume responsibility for damages to stones that you supply.

How long will my custom project take?

Custom work is generally completed within 8-12 weeks depending on the design and my schedule. The timeframe for your specific project will be established after our initial consultation.

Following the payment of the first deposit, we discuss design details, inspiration and Lauren will carve a 3D wax model of your ring. 2-3 rounds of drafts/edits are standard. The prompt payment of our invoices is expected and late payments can result in the delay of your piece.

One complimentary resizing (design dependent) is included in the first 2 months after purchase. I do my very best to make sure your ring fits perfect.

Custom jewelry is guaranteed for 1 year after the final date of completion and payment. We are not responsible for accidental damage or negligence by the wearer. We are always available to clean and polish your custom piece.

All custom and customized jewelry is non-returnable and non-refundable.

Next Steps

After you’ve read through all of this, your next step will be to complete a custom jewelry inquiry form (click button below). This will give me an overall feel for you and your project. I usually respond within one week of your inquiry.

Once I’ve responded to your inquiry, we can set up a time to chat further. I offer a complimentary 30 minute in-person/phone consultation to discuss whether I’m a good fit for your project. During this consultation we’ll discuss your budget, deadline and specifics of your custom piece. Design inspirations are also discussed briefly as well as what fine metals and/or gemstones you might be considering. It’s okay to not have a specific design idea in mind! However, I choose projects that are aligned with my aesthetic and skill set. If you like my style and other custom jewelry, chances are that we’ll be right for each other.
